Week 11 - Advice for Job-Hunters
It's important to understand that the job search process can be scary, but being prepared can make it less intimidating. A key step is to identify the skills employers are looking for, which can help guide the development of those skills. Through my research, I discovered that the skills employers are looking for cannot simply be taught but must be practiced. By identifying the skills needed for career advancement, researching dream jobs, and developing a plan to get there, people can increase their chances of landing their dream job.
In order to start a career in marketing, you need to develop certain skills. Research shows that marketing graduates don’t have all the skills employers are looking for. Kelley and Bridges (2005) note that, based on recent research in academic journals, business practitioners have expressed the view that marketing graduates lack certain professional and vocational skills. Understanding what skills employers are looking for will help you develop yours. In order to find a career in marketing, you need to hone some skills that can't be taught but can be practiced. For example, knowing how to work in a diverse workplace cannot be taught. Workplaces that accommodate diversity are appreciated in high-paying professions (Kelley & Bridges, 2005). Being able to communicate and work with a diverse group of people will make you stand out from the crowd. Williamson (2005) stated that "personal knowledge of existing European markets as well as language skills would be highly desirable". In addition to diversification, getting an education in an international market and possibly learning other languages is also ideal. Cultural diversity is highly valued in the growing global workforce.
In my own case, after searching for jobs on Careerbuilder.com, one day I found a job that I wanted. Hoping to be hired as Director of Marketing for the American Medical Association. AMSA (2016) is “a national, student-run organization dedicated to representing issues of concern to practicing physicians.” I would love to work for a company that is committed to a cause. The AMSA Director of Marketing position immediately caught my attention because of the organization it is. They require employees to have a bachelor's degree, 5 years of marketing or business development experience, excellent communication skills, and a thorough understanding of marketing principles, with advanced degrees preferred. Recruitment process. In order to find a job like this, I needed to gain experience in the field first. Creating a portfolio throughout my career will allow me to demonstrate my knowledge to future employers. In order to get an interview, I first applied online through their website. Next, I will call to follow up on the status of my application. Based on my past experience, follow-up resulted in me being treated fairly and finding a job. If I were invited for an interview, I would prepare myself by researching the company. Having a good understanding of your company's mission, values, and standards is a great way to show that you take the job seriously. Overall, being consistent, standing out, being prepared, and following up will help me land a dream job.
Finding a new job can be challenging. My strategy is to only apply for jobs I like. Even if I think I might not qualify, I still apply because trying is better than not trying. Observing job market trends is a great way to find a job. Additionally, online is a great way to self-skill. In order to manage my time, tasks, and goals, I plan to track every job I apply for. I will create a checklist to ensure I follow up with employers consistently. After getting my degree, my goal was to stand out from the crowd and land my dream job.
Overall, understanding the job market will give you an idea of what skills you need to develop. Being able to identify what employers are looking for will help you shape your skillset to land your dream job. Overall, persistence, consistency, and proactiveness will help you land a job and achieve career success.
